CIVIL ENGINEER / WATER RESOURCES ENGINEER (MID-LEVEL)

 

BayLand Consultants & Designers, Inc. (BayLand) is seeking a Civil/Site Design Engineer with 3 to 5 years’ engineering experience to support a growing workload in a diverse number of water resource and capital improvement projects. These projects include large-scale assessments and master planning for climate change resiliency and design of recreation and park facilities, capital infrastructure improvements, community amenities, and marine facilities projects.  This position will support our Stormwater and Sustainable Site Design Practice and help lead project design efforts. Typical duties will include site layout, grading, stormwater management design erosion and sediment control design, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling with considerations for climate change resiliency, preparation of reports, plans, and specifications, coordination with reviewers, permit applications and submittal packages.

The ideal candidate will work directly for Project Managers and have primary engineering design, coordination, and review responsibilities for assigned projects. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are an organized and motivated individual with strong communication skills; possess an eye for detail; can think critically; can work collaboratively with other team members; and can be responsible for independently completing engineering design tasks with minimal oversight.

The candidate should also be familiar with AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred) and have exposure to hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software. Coursework in hydrology and hydraulics will be considered in lieu of modeling experience. This position is offering a $2,500 signing bonus to our newest team member!​​

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university

  • 3+ years of experience

  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT)

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written with clients, regulators, public officials and team members

  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design

  • Knowledge of Maryland drainage manual, stormwater management design guidelines, climate change action plan, and erosion and sediment control methods and practices

  • Strong technical writing skills

  • Proficient with TR-20, HEC-RAS, or other H&H modeling software

  • Ability and desire to participate in field work

Desired Skills

  • P.E. license, or ability to obtain P.E. license within one year

  • Knowledge of survey data collection and processing

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

​

BayLand Consultants & Designers, Inc. (BayLand) is seeking an experienced Environmental Scientist with 5 to 8 years of relevant experience to join our team in support of a growing workload of water resource and ecological restoration projects. The work will focus on conducting Natural Resource Inventories/Forest Stand Delineations (NRIs/FSDs) and preparing and obtaining environmental permits. Responsibilities include wetland delineations in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) procedures, plant community surveys and descriptions, coordination with resource protection agencies including the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), Critical Area Commission (CAC), Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), planting/landscape plan formulation, preparation of a diverse range of deliverables using ArcGIS and AutoCAD; preparation of high quality graphics for project reports; and environmental planning and permitting.


The successful candidate will work directly with Project Scientists, Professional Engineers and Project Managers and must be an organized and motivated individual with strong technical writing capabilities and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with other team members. The ideal candidate would have experience in wetland delineation, forest stand delineation, and plant identification in the Mid-Atlantic region as well as a strong understanding of soils and soil processes. The ideal candidate would also have experience with wetland permitting for stream and ecological restoration, coastal restoration, and stormwater management projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. Environmental or Natural Resource Sciences

  • 5 – 8 years relevant working experience

  • Experience and ability to execute plant community surveys, wetland and forest stand delineations and related reports independently

  • Ability to service multiple projects and multiple in-house technical personnel

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (ENTRY LEVEL)

​

BayLand Consultants & Designers, Inc. (BayLand) is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist/GIS I to join our Marine Restoration team in support of a growing workload of marine and ecological restoration projects.


This position offers a balance of field and office-based work supporting water resource and coastal engineering projects. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Project Scientists, Professional Engineers, and Project Managers to support environmental planning, permitting, data collection, GIS analysis, and technical reporting efforts.


In this role, the Environmental Scientist will participate in a wide range of field investigations including soils and sediment sampling, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) surveys, tidal waterway reconnaissance, hydrographic and topographic surveys, water quality monitoring, natural resource inventories, and other vegetative or habitat assessments. The position requires accurate documentation and management of field data, use of GPS and survey equipment, and the ability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.


Office responsibilities include processing and organizing field data; preparing spreadsheets, graphs, maps, and technical figures. The candidate will assist in preparing environmental permit applications, regulatory assessments, and draft technical reports, while conducting research and contributing to environmental compliance documentation. The role also involves maintaining organized digital files and records, supporting project teams with coordinated technical and administrative tasks, and demonstrating a willingness to learn AutoCAD for processing survey and GPS data.


The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Geography, Marine Science, or a related field and have 0–1 years of relevant experience, including internships or academic fieldwork. Candidates should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, organized, and capable of both independent work and collaborative team engagement. Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical writing, are essential. Basic proficiency with ArcGIS and general computer software is expected, and a valid government-issued driver’s license is required.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and support multiple in-house technical staff across projects.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients, regulators, public officials, and team members.

  • Experience preparing high-quality technical reports, maps, figures, and exhibits.

  • Working knowledge of ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, or related GIS platforms.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, including Civil 3D, or willingness to develop proficiency.

Desired Skills

  • Strong writing skills and use of basic Microsoft Office tools including Word, Outlooks and Excel.

  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or ArcPro is a plus.

BayLand Consultants & Designers, Inc. (BayLand) is seeking motivated summer interns to join our growing team of engineers and scientists. The internship offers hands-on experience supporting a workload of diverse water resource and capital improvement projects. Projects include stormwater management; stream and wetland restoration; environmental monitoring; sustainable site development; shore erosion control; living shorelines; navigation, dredging and marine infrastructure.


Interns will work directly for Professional Engineers and Project Managers and will provide support to the design team in both field and office assignments. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals on projects involving water resources, civil infrastructure, and environmental analysis and will gain exposure to planning, design, modeling fieldwork and regulatory compliance activities. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they: are an organized and motivated individual with strong communication skills; possess an eye for detail; can work collaboratively with other team members; and can become responsible for independently completing assigned tasks with minimal oversight.
